SAG-AFTRA Success: Artists Gain AI Protections in Record Label Agreement
Hollywood performers and media professionals have reached a tentative agreement with major record labels such as Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, covering the period from 2021 to 2026. The deal, unanimously approved by the executive committee of SAG-AFTRA, represents approximately 160,000 actors and media professionals.
The agreement addresses concerns regarding using artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry, particularly in music creation. AI-generated songs have become a significant issue, allowing users to replicate artists’ voices without their consent. The tentative deal mandates consent and compensation before releasing a song that uses a digital replica of an artist’s voice. Additionally, terms such as “artist,” “singer,” and “royalty artist” are defined to refer to humans exclusively under the agreement.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, emphasized the importance of protecting members while acknowledging the potential of technology to enhance creativity. He stated that while technology can play a role in the creative process, music’s essence should remain rooted in genuine human expression and experience.
The agreement also includes improvements in health and retirement options for union members and an increase in the percentage of streaming revenue covered by contributions. These provisions aim to enhance the overall well-being and financial security of performers and media professionals in the industry.
