Donald Trump has sparked backlash after saying people with learning disabilities “should not” be president, while mocking Gavin Newsom over his dyslexia.

Speaking at the White House, Trump criticised Newsom—widely seen as a potential Democratic presidential contender—calling him “dumb” and ridiculing his reading difficulties. The president also used a derogatory nickname for the governor and suggested that having a learning disability should disqualify someone from holding the presidency.

Newsom responded sharply on social media, dismissing Trump’s comments and defending his openness about dyslexia. The California governor has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with reading and academic performance, noting that he rarely reads from prepared speeches.

The remarks drew condemnation from advocacy groups, including the National Center for Learning Disabilities, which said it was “disturbed” by the comments. The organisation emphasised that dyslexia—a condition affecting how the brain processes written language—does not impact intelligence, judgement, or leadership ability.

Dyslexia is relatively common, affecting an estimated 15–20% of the US population, according to health authorities. Experts note that many individuals with the condition have succeeded at the highest levels across politics, business, and other fields.

The exchange marks the latest escalation in a growing war of words between Trump and Newsom, as political tensions intensify ahead of future US elections.
