Ukraine Conflict Update: Russian Missile Attack Targets Kyiv
The Ukraine Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported that 31 missiles launched by Russia at Kyiv overnight had been intercepted, marking the largest Russian attack in weeks. The onslaught resulted in at least 17 injuries, including a child, with four individuals hospitalized due to falling debris.
This escalation follows Moscow’s vow for retaliation against recent attacks by Ukraine on its border regions. The attack prompted Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky to renew appeals for more military assistance from Western allies.
The alarm sounded at 03:00 local time, warning of a ballistic missile threat, with explosions heard two hours later. Debris fell across several districts in Kyiv, igniting fires and causing damage to residential buildings, cars, and a power transformer, as reported by Serhiy Popko, head of the city’s military administration.
Fortunately, all enemy missiles were successfully neutralized over Kyiv and its surroundings. However, the target of Russia’s attack remains unclear.
The aftermath of the assault left a devastating scene in residential areas such as Lukyanivka, where a large crater marred the street, windows shattered, and buildings damaged. Many sought refuge in basements and the metro during the onslaught.
Amidst the chaos, emotional residents voiced frustration and anguish, lamenting the perceived indifference of the world towards Ukraine’s suffering. The attack’s toll included personal losses, such as pets trapped amidst the destruction.
Meanwhile, in the nearby Sumy region, intensified shelling and air strikes prompted the evacuation of over 300 individuals, highlighting the widespread impact of the conflict.
President Zelensky reiterated calls for increased military aid, particularly air defense systems, stressing the urgent need for protection against ongoing terror attacks. He emphasized the importance of political will among Western partners to provide necessary support.

In Brussels, EU leaders convened to discuss bolstering military and financial aid for Ukraine, with proposals including the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Kyiv.
