The United States targeted Kharg Island because it is one of the most important strategic and economic sites in Iran.

Why Kharg Island matters

Kharg Island lies about 15 nautical miles (24 km) off Iran’s coast in the Persian Gulf. Despite its small size, it serves as Iran’s largest oil export terminal. Around 90% of the country’s crude oil exports pass through the island, making it a crucial source of revenue.

Oil from the Iranian mainland is transported to Kharg through pipelines, then loaded onto huge tankers that can carry tens of millions of gallons of crude. These tankers travel through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes, before heading mainly to China, Iran’s biggest oil customer.

Because of this role, the island is often described as Iran’s economic lifeline. It also provides revenue to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which plays a major role in Iran’s military and security operations.

What the US said about the strike

Donald Trump said US forces carried out a large bombing raid that destroyed military facilities on the island. According to United States Central Command, more than 90 Iranian military targets were struck, including missile storage sites, naval mine depots and other defence infrastructure.

However, the US deliberately avoided hitting the oil export facilities.

Trump said he chose not to destroy the oil infrastructure “for reasons of decency,” but warned that he could reconsider if Iran interferes with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Why the oil facilities were spared

Destroying Kharg Island’s oil terminal would severely damage Iran’s economy, but it could also dramatically escalate the conflict. Such an attack could:

  • Send global oil prices sharply higher
  • Trigger Iranian attacks on energy infrastructure across the Middle East
  • Lead to strikes on shipping routes or regional facilities like desalination plants that supply drinking water

Military analysts say the strike appears to be a strategic warning—damaging Iran’s military capabilities while leaving its economic lifeline intact for now.

What Iran said

Iranian officials said the island’s oil infrastructure was not damaged and exports are continuing. But the country’s military warned that if Kharg’s oil facilities are targeted, energy infrastructure connected to US interests would be destroyed in retaliation.

Could the US try to seize the island?

There is speculation that US forces might attempt to capture Kharg Island. If that happened, it could cut off most of Iran’s oil exports and provide a base for further operations against the mainland.

Reports say amphibious ships carrying thousands of Marines have been sent to the Gulf, although the Pentagon has not confirmed any plan to seize the island.

In short, Kharg Island was targeted because it is a critical military and economic hub for Iran, and striking it sends a strong strategic signal without yet crippling the country’s oil industry.
