Xi Jinping Extols China-France Relations as Macron Gears Up for Trade Talks
President Xi Jinping arrived in Paris, praising the strong ties between China and France as a global exemplar of cooperation. However, his visit comes amid escalating trade tensions between China and the European Union (EU). French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to address trade imbalances with Xi and urge him to leverage China’s influence over Russia concerning the conflict in Ukraine. During his two-day visit, Xi is scheduled to meet with Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.
Upon his arrival, Xi emphasized the significance of the relationship between China and France, portraying it as a model for peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation despite differences in social systems. However, recent trade disputes, such as the EU’s investigation into Chinese electric vehicle exports and Beijing’s retaliatory probe into French brandy imports, underscore the challenges in this relationship.
Macron, in an interview before Xi’s visit, expressed the need for reciprocity in trade relations and highlighted concerns about economic security. He also acknowledged differing opinions within the EU regarding China, noting that some view China primarily as an opportunity-rich market.
The EU’s divided stance on China, particularly between major players like France and Germany, could undermine its ability to engage with China effectively. France aims to address issues such as opening the Chinese market to its agricultural exports and resolving concerns regarding intellectual property rights in the French cosmetic industry.
During Xi’s visit, there was speculation about a potential Chinese order for Airbus aircraft, though the details remain uncertain. France also seeks China’s cooperation in pressuring Russia to cease its actions in Ukraine, but progress on this front has been limited.
Macron plans to take Xi to the Pyrenees, a region with personal significance to the French President before Xi continues his trip to Serbia and Hungary, which are known for their close ties with Russia. French diplomatic sources emphasize the importance of China understanding and acknowledging European perspectives as they seek to deepen their relationship.
