China is the epicenter of the electric car pricing war, and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and BYD (002594. S.Z.) dominate the SUV sector.

Analysts and executives expect at least 20 new Chinese and international models to launch in April, compressing price and margins at home and pushing exports in a market with more than 90 models.
Analysts claimed Chinese E.V. manufacturers had followed Tesla’s aggressive price reduction by dropping pricing for their electric SUVs, cannibalizing ICE sales as the price gap narrows.

China-made electric SUVs will export the trend.

China’s ultra-competitive market will lead to a lot of exports. “It’s a pressure release valve,” said Sino Auto Insights founder Tu Le.

Over the previous decade, China has sold about 40% of all automobiles as SUVs, with 400 SUV models of various fuel kinds.

In 2022, Europe sold more than 11 million China-made SUVs.

Since Tesla introduced its domestically-produced Model Y in China two years ago, electric SUVs have become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world’s largest auto market.

The April Shanghai Auto Show featured new vehicles from Chinese and foreign automakers.

Volkswagen, BMW, and Toyota are betting on new electric SUVs to boost China sales.

Xpeng (9868. H.K.) and Nio (9866. H.K.) offers six SUV models, and state-owned vehicle firms like GAC’s (601238. S.S.) Aion is pushing all-electric SUVs.

They will compete with 93 electric SUV models in a market that sold 1.5 million units in 2022, with the top 10 brands accounting for 84%, according to Reuters analysis of CAAM statistics.

Before Tesla started making Model Ys in China, 76 electric SUVs sold an average of 3,000 units annually.

Tesla’s Model Y is 20% cheaper in China than in early October when inventories were growing.

DISCOUNT WAR Xpeng, Leapmotor (9863. H.K.), and others have responded with discounts, while BYD discounted its market-leading Song Plus SUV by $1,000, or 4%.

Those unwilling to cut costs on older models have offered lower-than-expected beginning prices for new models with longer driving ranges and more autonomous driving features to safeguard brand value.

For instance, Geely’s (0175. H.K.) (GEELY.UL) luxury E.V. brand Zeekr priced its new small crossover Zeekr X from $27,500, 28% lower than Model Y and roughly the same price as Honda’s (7267.T) CR-V, whose first-quarter sales fell 56%.

Last week, Mitsubishi Motors (7211.T) delayed Chinese Outlander SUV production for three months.

Le of Sino Auto Insights called it “brutal” for legacy international automakers like Ford eyeing the mass market with compact SUVs under $40,000.

Jim Farley, Ford’s (F.N.) CEO attributed China’s auto export surge to fierce rivalry for two-row, SUV-styled EVs.

They’re focusing on Europe. European exports are top-notch. “They’re all going there,” Farley remarked in April after visiting China.

Last week, Farley said Ford would restructure its China business to make one of its joint ventures an export powerhouse for low-cost commercial electric and combustion cars.

General Motors (GM.N) needs its new E.V.s to successfully regain market share in China.

“China has 100 vehicle brands vying for sales and a 50% capacity utilization rate,” stated CEO Mary Barra.

Tesla and Renault (RENA.PA) ship substantial numbers of China-made electric SUVs to Europe. According to Reuters, Tesla will transport Model Y crossovers from Shanghai to Canada.

Chinese manufacturers want to boost European electric SUV sales.

Zeekr announced it would deliver the Zeekr X to Western Europe, while BYD’s Atto 3 SUV exports increased in the first quarter after receiving orders there.

“The styling of it (Atto 3) is in keeping with the higher driving position, the good space,” said BYD’s British marketing chief Mark Blundell.

“It’s a good U.K. start for us.”
