Copper traders are becoming increasingly cautious about the metal’s powerful rally as uncertainty persists over whether US President Donald Trump will follow through on plans to impose tariffs on copper imports.

Since Trump returned to office, the prospect of new tariffs has triggered a major shift in global copper inventories. Traders have rushed to move supplies into the US ahead of potential levies, taking advantage of unusually high prices in the American market.

Until recent weeks, copper futures traded on the New York market had consistently commanded a premium over the London Metal Exchange (LME) benchmark. That price gap created lucrative opportunities for traders shipping copper to the US before any tariffs took effect.

The flow of metal into the US has reduced inventories elsewhere, tightening supplies in international markets. Continued imports have also reinforced the rally, helping push LME copper prices to a record high of nearly $15,000 per metric ton last month.

However, as Trump approaches the midpoint of his second term, even some of copper’s strongest bulls are growing concerned about the market’s direction.

The central risk is that prices could fall sharply if the administration does not introduce the anticipated tariffs. Much of the recent market momentum has been linked to expectations of the policy change, leaving prices vulnerable if those expectations are not met.

If the tariffs fail to materialize, traders may reassess their positions, potentially reversing some of the inventory movements that have helped drive prices higher.

For now, copper’s outlook hinges partly on the administration’s next steps. While tight inventories and strong buying interest have supported the rally, the absence of a clear tariff decision is prompting investors to question whether the metal’s gains can be sustained.
