Chelsea Abingdon is a hardworking woman who has managed to fly airplanes, a male-dominated job. Of course, many females get scared when flying a plane. Yet Chelsea has managed to follow her passion until she became a pilot in 2006.

After I got my flying license, I felt good. I wanted to reward myself with an aviator watch. Unfortunately, the online market was still very young, and only a few companies like eBay, Alibaba, and Amazon were in operation. I stayed online looking for a watch for the whole day, but I could only find “crickets.

I decided to get a customized watch because the market was very limited, but something kept telling me that my dream watch for the pilot was an aviator. In addition, we had other female pilots who wanted the same products.

From all the aviation schools in the US, females represent only 6% of the piloting industry. Almost 15000 female pilots did not secure an aviator watch when we were graduating.

That was a gap in the market. I have had a passion for entrepreneurship since my a teenager. I called a meeting with myself and said, ‘If I left this chance could serve as regret in the future.’ So, I decided to fill the void and adventure in the business world. For almost one year, I spent my part-time developing innovative products.

In November 2007, I launched The Abingdon Co. The startup had two amazing designed products. I went ahead to set up a website to capture the online market. That was the beginning of my entrepreneurship journey.

Currently, My Lag Vegas firm has almost ten employees. Furthermore, I have collaborated with big brands in Japan to borrow some designs from their market. As a result, the Japanese are good trading partners as they have crafted and distributed a dozen of my products in their cities. The price of each aviator watch ranges from $300-$800, depending on the material and design.

The watches are in different shapes and sizes because women also differ in tastes. Color is also an essential and sensitive thing for the female gender. So today I look at my journey and am like, ‘Chelsea Abingdon made a great and wise decision right?’. I remember the moment I just wanted to create my aviator. But I changed my mind to create almost 500 for every female pilot. And that is what has turned out to be a bigger company.

To a younger Chelsea Abingdon, as you grow up, have in mind that many women are underrepresented in various careers. Do not be afraid of such a thing, and there is no career for a specific gender. However, your motivation and hard work can take you to greater heights. Follow your passion, and it will bore fruits.

I was only 22 when I started my practicals to fly the first jet. All my teenage life, I dreamed of being a pilot. Lucky enough, I was able to attend a lot of seminars that took place next to our home. I intended to get free meals, but I listened carefully when two pilots spoke about their journey.

From that time henceforth, I realized my passion was in airports. So, with the support from my parents, I joined The Ninety-Nines International center for female pilots. That’s was the institution that shaped my career. I made new friends who later became business partners. Some of them were my first customers to purchase her aviator watches.

I recall a specific day after the graduation of new female pilots when thousands of them were looking for an aviator watch. After getting a link to my site, the requests were too many until the website crushed. So I hired a technical backend engineer to handle and fix that quickly.

Apart from my online stores, I have retail shops in South Africa, the US, and Canada. I was blessed with speech to make new connections from different countries easily.

In 2014, I wanted to diversify my products. So my skilled personnel can manufacture watches for base-jumpers, sailors, divers, and equestrians. Over the years, my company’s revenue has been growing steadily, and I am happy about that.

My biggest achievement is not about money but the change I made to the female gender. I want more women to be comfortable and participate in “adrenaline junkie activities’. Each day is a motivation when I see women working hard to enter male-dominated sports. I get relieved when I hear some customers saying, ‘I am a horse rider, a car racer, or a scuba driver.’

My piloting journey has not been easy. Some people will assume or even call me a flight attendant. Okay, I don’t feel bad because that is just their thought, and I respect it.

My business has been operating for more than ten years. Abingdon Co is known worldwide. Together with my team, we are dedicated to creating new products each month to attract more customers.
