Abbott Stands Firm: Defending Decision to Send Migrants to New York
Texas Governor Greg Abbott defended his migrant relocation program, which began almost two years ago, amidst accusations that he is exploiting asylum-seekers for political gain. Abbott accused President Joe Biden of using migrants as “political pawns” while facing criticism for allegedly doing the same.
Cities like New York, among Abbott’s relocation targets, are struggling to manage the influx of migrants, leading Mayor Eric Adams to condemn Abbott’s actions as politicizing human lives.
However, Abbott shifted blame to Biden, asserting that the president’s border policies prompted the program Abbott initiated in 2022. Despite Biden’s efforts to push immigration reform, Republican opposition in Congress, fueled by former President Donald Trump’s influence, has stymied progress.
Abbott also criticized Mayor Adams, accusing him of exacerbating the migrant crisis by maintaining sanctuary city status, which offers protection to undocumented immigrants.
