Meta stated Tuesday that it will eliminate posts featuring “Zionist” in conjunction with antisemitic or dehumanizing words, expanding its hate speech policy.
The company said it made the decision after a months-long investigation into how the term has been used historically and on social media, especially during the Gaza war.
Meta said, “We have determined that the existing policy guidance does not sufficiently address the ways people are using the term ‘Zionist’ online and offline.” Going forward, we will remove anything attacking ‘Zionists’ that is not specifically about the political movement but uses antisemitic tropes, intimidation, or violence against Jews or Israelis.
Meta consulted over 145 historians, civil rights groups, legal and human rights experts, and free speech activists worldwide before making its judgment.
Meta added that using the term “Zionist” in connection with antisemitic claims about Jews running the world, parallels between Jews and animals, calls for harm against Jews or statements that deny their existence, or mocking Jews for having a disease may now violate Meta’s terms.
The firm also requested direction from its quasi-judicial monitoring body on how to regulate remarks accusing “proxy terms for nationality (including Zionists)” of war crimes.
