A U.S. official announced Tuesday that President Joe Biden had nominated Air Force Lieutenant General Timothy Haugh to lead the NSA and Cyber Command.
The official corroborated a Politico article citing a Monday Air Force notice.
Haugh reports to NSA and Cyber Command chief Paul Nakasone as the military’s U.S. Cyber Command deputy commander.
The NSA is America’s electronic spy organization, while Cyber Command defends military networks and hacks foes.
According to his Air Force biography, Haugh was intelligence director at Cyber Command and Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force Ares, which hacked Islamic State fighters in the Middle East.
Haugh recently led the Cyber National Mission digital special operations team. Last year, the Senate Armed Services Committee appointed him.
Haugh has a master’s in telecommunications, joint information operations, and national resource strategy. Lehigh University’s Russian Studies ROTC program graduated him.
The NSA, Cyber Command, and White House did not immediately reply to inquiries.
