On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed legislators that the State Department is reviewing the Afghanistan pullout and would report to Congress by mid-April.
In a Senate Appropriations Committee subcommittee hearing, Blinken said, “We’ve now been spending time putting all of this together to make sure that we look at some of the common lessons learned.”
“We’ll provide Congress that information, I promise. Around mid-April. Today, I can confirm the after-action review. Within three weeks, we’ll reveal the findings and figure out how.”
Congress wants details on the August 2021 Afghanistan exit. The Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee vowed this week to subpoena the State Department if it fails to provide requested papers.
Republicans, who seized control of the House in January, claim the disastrous operation that killed 13 U.S. servicemen at Kabul’s airport has never been fully explained.
Left behind were hundreds of Americans and Afghan accomplices.
