JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is also a motivational speaker at most graduation ceremonies across the world. In September, he shared his wise words with graduates from Ohio State University. The CEO laid down some important notes on how each individual should find purpose in failure:
You can’t do everything the right way
He said that he feels good and self-motivated to give advice to a young adult like he did everything the right way. But that is not the case here, everyone has to make the wrong decision by choosing a bad path. There is no one who can predict tomorrow and the result of the path you have taken. During the ceremony, Dimon insisted on the importance of failure while young, a report by CNBC.
He pleaded with everyone on how negative the pandemic has been to the economy. Everyone got affected in different ways, but this doesn’t dim any bright light in the future. As young adults, they must be ready for a tougher future with multiple failures. One must be ready for both personal and professional failures as one grows older.
Fighting obstacles
Jamie Dimon has controlled and won many obstacles that crossed his path. In 1998, he worked with his mentor for almost 15 years. But one day, the mentor fired him from Citigroup. That was a very difficult moment. He stayed jobless for almost a year. Over his period, he was making both bad and good decisions on where to step next.

After two years, Dimon was announced as the CEO of Chicago-based bank One. It was a growing company and for the short period, it made much improvement. The profit margin rose by 10%. JPMorgan saw the opportunity and grabbed it. They absorbed the Chicago-based bank in exchange for shares and dollars. It’s through his hard work that JPMorgan Chase became the number one largest bank in the country, a report by flipboard.
Learning is a continuous process
Dimon continued, “Learning is a lifelong pursuit,”. It’s the student’s job to ensure they put in more effort and consistency in learning. Even though you will graduate, but that doesn’t mean the education curve has stopped. The course or career doesn’t have any issues here. You just need to spend some time in your daily activities, to embrace learning. To be successful, you have to be intellectually curious about new things.

Learning through experience sharpens your attitude. Jamie Dimon talked about the 50% of the time that he spends reading new materials daily. It’s always best when you teach yourself something rather than getting help from a teacher. Research is always the key to acquiring much knowledge. Today, almost everything is on the internet. The world is moving fast as complex things come in.

Not only reading, but Dimon insists that students must have an open mind to learn from others. He continued, “You can learn more from speaking to someone in 15 minutes than spending your life doing something,”. The CEO learned the virtue of choosing what not to do and what to do from people. It’s through peers, colleagues, workmates that people learn a lot.

JPMorgan Chase CEO graduated in 1978 from Tufts University, where he earned his first degree. He applied to Harvard School of business and earned a master’s degree in 1978. Recently, he has received an honorary degree from the University of Ohio State. He was a CEO but undertaking classes. That is what we refer to as self-motivation. Embracing the learning curve will always make you bold and wise.

Jamie Dimon has appeared among the top 100 richest people around the globe by Forbes. His net worth is almost $2 billion. But the CEO does not look old, he still has much power to run many companies. He has extra projects which he could not disclose.
