The Past

Initially, the group was called the National Association of Cost Accountants. In 1957, the name was changed to the National Association of Accountants. The name was changed again in 1991 to the Institute of Management Accountants.

The first meeting was held in Atlantic City, and the first chapter was formed in Chicago in 1920. The CMA certification program was created by the group in 1972. It put out the first rule of ethics for management accountants in the US in 1983. It was called Standards of Ethical Conduct for Management Accountants. The IMA started the Certified Financial Manager program in 1996 but stopped running it in 2007.
