Google Partners With Asian Companies To Build $300M Undersea Cable To Japan

Google has partnered with five Asian telecom firms to invest $300 million to build a trans-Pacific cable network between the United States and Japan.

According to Reuters, the project named “FASTER” will have a capacity of 60 terabits per second and connect several west coast major cities, including Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, Oregon and Seattle, to Chikura and Shima in Japan. The cable will extend to cover more places in the future.

NEC Corp, the system supplier for the project, said in a statement that the construction would begin immediately and would be done in the first half of 2016.

Australia Network News reported that the undersea cable is not a new project, but “the FASTER cable system has the largest design capacity ever built on the Trans-Pacific route, which is one of the longest routes in the world”, Woohyong Choi, chairman of the project’s executive committee, said in a statement.

Other partnered companies are Japanese mobile carrier KDDI, China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Malaysia’s Global Transit, and Singapore’s SingTel, the statement said.
