On Tuesday, Imran Khan’s aides said Pakistani security officers detained him at Islamabad High Court.
Geo TV reported the corruption arrest of cricketer-turned-politician Khan.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party posted footage of his imprisonment in a van by hundreds of riot-gear-clad security officials.
Khan’s counsel, Fawad Chaudhry, said security forces who detained Khan “attacked” the court in a video.
Detention did not instantly affect Marriyum Aurangzeb.
Khan has been indicted with over 100 corruption counts since his April 2018 parliamentary defeat. His four-year term expired.
With a November national election, Khan may be disqualified from public office.
Khan’s party promised to expand demonstrations following his detention, which many fear would worsen the government’s economic troubles in a nuclear-armed nation near bankruptcy.
Khan’s supporters fought police during Lahore home arrests.
Pakistan’s military has controlled for nearly half its history, and political infighting is common.
