The Mainichi Shimbun reported on Sunday that support for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s cabinet fell 12 percentage points to 33% during a Group of Seven leaders summit in Hiroshima.

After a scandal involving Kishida’s eldest son and a series of technical issues with the national identity card system, Mainichi’s weekend poll found 58% dissatisfaction, up from 46% in late May.

Mainichi said Kishida government approval rose to its highest level since August 2022, last month ahead of the G7. Kishida may call a snap election before the party leadership competition next year.

Sunday’s Kyodo survey revealed that support for Kishida’s government fell to 40.8% from 47% in May.
