Jibo the Family Robot to Be a Useful Companion

Jibo is a desktop robot that is attempting to break new ground as the first family robot. Dr. Cynthia Breazeal, head of the Personal Robots Group at MIT Media Lab, believes Jibo can be a learning tool, an organizer and one day assist the elderly in their daily lives.

Jibo is competitively priced at $499 for consumers, and the list of abilities of the robot is impressive. Jibo can take pictures for you, so you don’t have to be left out when taking photos. He can take photos and videos completely on his own by tracking activity around him. Hands-free reminders are announced by Jibo as they arrive. Jibo reads to children and swivels for a more connected experience. He (Jibo has a male voice) can hear you from anywhere in the room via 360 degree speakers, and his artificial intelligence algorithms adapt to your lifestyle.

Another big plus is that, according to Dr. Breazeal, Jibo is “the first social robotics platform,” which means that Jibo will have more abilities at its disposal in the future, like connecting to your home to power the lights when you show up from work and playing your voicemail messages. Even ordering take-out food will be a breeze with Jibo.

Breazeal added, “Jibo isn’t an appliance, it’s a companion, one that can interact and react to its human owners in ways that delight instead of disturb. Jibo supports the human experience, but tries not to be human.”

As for specs, Jibo has a 5.7-inch touchscreen. It has touch sensors in its head, which recognizes that people, especially children, communicate with touch. Jibo has three motors that give it its smooth swivels, and the face can rotate a full 360 degrees. He moves in an animated fashion, not like the lifeless versions of mobile robots in movies or on television. iOS and Android apps will be available for people that want to stay connected to Jibo while they’re out and about.

Breazeal’s crowd-funding campaign for Jibo has already passed its early $100,000 goal five times over, and orders are estimated to be delivered by December 2015. Consumers can buy a Jibo for personal use or contribute more to donate Jibos to Boston Children’s Hospital for children with special needs.
