Wednesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced a constitutional amendment to elect judges and magistrates.

After the Supreme Court partially overturned an electoral reform that would reduce Mexico’s elections authority, Lopez Obrador criticized the court.

Lopez Obrador criticized the judiciary on Wednesday for favoring conservatives. The day before, had labeled them “rotten” and lacking “remedy.”

“End the control of those at the top once and for all, so that it’s the people of Mexico who rule and govern,” Lopez Obrador said in a regular press conference. The constitutional revision would require two-thirds congressional approval.

Lopez Obrador’s rule MORENA lacks the votes for constitutional revision.

The president stated Tuesday he will deliver constitutional revisions in September 2024, seeking to encourage people to support his alliance in the next elections.

On Monday, Mexico’s Supreme Court overturned a Lopez Obrador-backed electoral law that limited INE’s political communication policing.

Critics say the move weakens democracy before elections. The president constantly criticizes the INE for allowing voting fraud to cost him two elections.
