On Wednesday, Pope Francis said no victory could be “built on ruins” and urged a ceasefire and peace talks. He made this statement two days before the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Francis spoke during his weekly general audience at the Vatican, calling for an end to the carnage in Ukraine since Russia invaded the nation on February 24, 2022.
Francis spoke during his weekly general audience at the Vatican, calling for an end to the carnage in Ukraine since Russia invaded the nation on February 24, 2022.
“It has been a terrible anniversary, a year since the beginning of this ridiculous and horrible conflict,” he remarked.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” Francis stated, referring to the number of individuals killed, injured, or forced to flee their homes.
Together with a group of Ukrainian government representatives, the audience was attended by Ukraine’s ambassador to the Vatican, Andrii Yurash.
“May the Lord pardon the numerous crimes and acts of violence. He is the peacemaker. Let’s continue to stand behind the slain Ukrainian people as they endure more suffering “Francis remarked.
Francis condemned Russia’s “special operation” in Ukraine and its abuses and civilian deaths.
The pope said: “Is everything done to halt the war? I urge all leaders to commit to ending the violence, establishing a ceasefire, and beginning peace talks “.
