Ukraine’s Zelenskiy is paying a visit to Belgium. This Wednesday, according to Belgian media, Zelenskiy of Ukraine is in Belgium, where a gathering of NATO defense ministers is taking place. A session of the NATO-Ukraine Council, a body set up at the alliance’s Vilnius summit in July to promote closer collaboration between NATO and Kyiv, is also scheduled to take place in Brussels, bringing together NATO ministers and their Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov.
The damage to an undersea gas pipeline and a communications cable connecting NATO members Finland and Estonia are among the topics that the ministers will consider in addition to the conflict in Ukraine.
Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defense minister, is anticipated to join the ministers on Thursday via videoconference to talk about the implications of the massive attack by Hamas on Israel last weekend.
According to local media, Zelenskiy will also meet with the Belgian government, hold a news conference, and participate in a “Ukraine Defense Contact Group” meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
Starting on Jan. 1, 2024, Belgium will take over the rotating presidency of the European Union from Spain for six months.
With additional air defense systems to thwart Russian strikes on energy facilities and more ammunition to assure Ukrainian forces can maintain their counteroffensive, officials in the Contact Group were scheduled to concentrate on assisting Ukraine in getting ready for the winter.
Diplomats anticipate that top American military officers like Air Force General Charles Q. Brown and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will try to reassure Ukraine and NATO allies that Washington will continue to support Kyiv despite aid being delayed by partisanship in the U.S. Congress.
After visiting Romania, Zelenskiy traveled to Brussels. While there, he urged for action to prevent Russia from turning the Black Sea into a “dead zone” for ships after Moscow reneged on a pact permitting secure grain shipments from Ukraine.
