Italy’s fire brigade is investigating why Venice’s major canal turned fluorescent green Sunday near the Rialto bridge.

The department tweeted that the regional environmental protection agency got samples of the altered waters and is identifying the component that changed their color.

According to Ansa, the Venice prefect has convened an emergency police meeting to investigate and consider countermeasures.

In Italy, environmental activists have colored monuments, including Rome’s Trevi fountain, to protest fossil fuels.

Unlike other examples, no activist group has claimed credit for Venice.
