Wearable technology is set to be the next big market in personal technology. Samsung, Sony, and Pebble are all making a play at the market. Amazon has just launched a virtual wearable technology store. Apple will be releasing a highly anticipated smartwatch as well, which many consider the standard that consumer electronics live up to. Will people buy them? The unfortunate answer is yes. Consumer electronics are trendy. If you have the newest hot commodity it is automatically the best.
To their credit, they can do some pretty cool things though. Depending on the watch you choose they can do everything from display information from your phone to monitoring your physical activity and sleeping habits. However, do we think it will become the new standard in watches? No. As sharp as an LED screen looks, it can’t be the classiness of a real face watch. Well hopefully this will remain true.
But just because we can have technology strapped to our bodies, does it mean that we should? Don’t get us wrong, technology and innovation have there place. You wouldn’t be reading this post without it. But there is an undeniable truth that face-to-face communication is sadly becoming a thing of the past. It’s easier to send a text or snapchat than to have a meaningful conversation with another person. We’re continuing further and further into a world where it is impossible to be unplugged.
As great as this all is, in the end it’s a little obnoxious. Are smart phones really not enough? Is it really necessary to strap a device to your body in order to track your own activity. Can you not tell that you’re walking? Do you really need a device to let you know? Unless you’re a professional athlete the answer is most likely no. Whether you’re willing to admit it or not technology is becoming ingrained deeper and deeper into every aspect of our lives. If there’s ever an end, it’s hard to say what it is.
