On Wednesday, social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, said it would try a new subscription model that would give users a one-time yearly price of $1 for the most basic functions.

Under the new “Not A Bot” subscription, users will be charged for liking, reposting, quoting, and bookmarking content on the platform’s online version.

X stated that the new subscription model is being introduced to fight spammers and bots and that the cost would vary from nation to nation, depending on the currency rate.

According to X, users in New Zealand and the Philippines will be the first to have access to the new approach.

Existing users are unaffected by this test. New users, however, will only be allowed to browse and read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts if they do not desire to subscribe.

Elon Musk, who bought the firm last year, has a thorny problem with bots. The restriction on seeing tweets was implemented by X in July “to ensure the authenticity” of its user base.

In a meeting with X’s lenders earlier this month, according to a source cited by Reuters, CEO Linda Yaccarino said the business will test three tiers of its subscription service dependent on how many adverts are displayed to the user.
