The Financial Times reported on Monday that design complexity had pushed Apple (AAPL.O) to lower Vision Pro manufacturing expectations.
The Vision Pro, unveiled last month and likely to be available in the US early next year, costs $3,499, more than three times Meta’s (META.O) most expensive headset.
The publication reported that Apple’s only contract manufacturer, Luxshare, planned to create fewer than 400,000 Vision Pros in 2024.
According to the FT, Apple had planned to sell 1 million headsets in the first year. Apple and Luxshare declined to comment to Reuters.
According to FT, The iPhone maker requested components from two Chinese suppliers for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year, delaying plans for a cheaper model.
The device’s micro-OLED displays are FT’s biggest production challenge. The report indicated Apple was disappointed with defect-free micro-OLED yield.
Apple and Luxshare did not respond to an email requesting details of the problems.
A Luxshare insider told FT that the 2024 production prediction drop “disappointed” the company, which is planning to construct around 18 million devices annually.
