If you’ve used the internet in the last decade then there should be no confusion about Google. They have made searching the internet far more efficient than it ever was and is constantly searching to improve the Google experience. While the tech giant is synonymous with search engines, Google’s true desire is the quest for more information. Information on what you ask? It doesn’t matter, from your login information to storage location, Google is happy to collect any information you’re willing to provide. Recently Google continued their history of data collection by acquiring Rangespan.
Looking to improving its online shopping portal Google purchased Rangespan for a yet to be disclosed sum. Rangespan is a London based company focusing on consumer forecasting. By collecting science data in real time sales, Rangespan allows business to evaluate the most efficient way to expand their product selection. Rangespan’s found Ryan Regan announced that he will be joining the Google team. He was quoted as saying “There are a lot of parallels between what we are doing and what Google is doing and we are excited to work together.” Though there were three others listed as employees on the company’s website, it is unclear if any of the others will be joining Google as well.
At this time Rangespan has already been shut down. When trying to visit the site visitors are now being greeted with a message announcing the buy out. It is speculated that Google’s plans with the software are too market it to big time retailers in order to help them attract buyers through Google. What this all really means is what has already been happening. We will see more marketing becoming increasingly more specific towards the viewers interests and needs. With great data comes great responsibility and Google is slowly and surely gathering it all.
