Spain’s watchdog clears Amazon, Booking.com, and Tripadvisor over fake reviews. On Wednesday, Spain’s anti-trust authority exonerated Amazon (AMZN.O.), Booking Holdings (BKNG.O.), and Tripadvisor (TRIP.O.) of allegations that they participated in or facilitated the creation of bogus reviews on their respective websites.
A local group that defends consumers had filed a complaint with the Canadian National Motor Vehicle Commission (CNMC), known as the watchdog.
“CNMC found no indication that the platforms have participated in or facilitated the publication of these false opinions,” it said in a statement, adding that the firms invested in identifying bogus reviews and helped with current investigations. “CNMC found no indication that the platforms have participated in or facilitated the publication of these false opinions,” it added.
However, the watchdog has discovered what may be considered indicators of a breach of consumer protection legislation. As a result, the complaint has been forwarded to the organization that oversees consumer rights.
No additional information was provided; nevertheless, the first complaint alluded to probable indicators that vendors and intermediaries approach users intending to have them submit fake evaluations in return for money or gift them things, which violates consumer protection legislation. No further information was provided.
A representative for Amazon stated that the firm is taking action to combat fraudulent reviews on its platforms.
Booking Holdings and Tripadvisor did not react immediately to emails asking for comments.
