If there was doubt that Hamas militants have been using Gaza civilian buildings to run terrorist operations, there is no more now. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency confirmed that 20 rockets were found in a United Nations-run school on Wednesday, July 16. The rockets were found during a routine inspection of the school, and it was reported that at the time of the inspection, the building was vacant.
In an official statement, the UNRWA said, as reported by The Times of Israel, “UNRWA strongly condemns the group or groups responsible for placing the weapons in one of its installations. This is a flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law.” UNRWA officials reported that all of the rockets were successfully and safely removed from the school. Israel has always claimed that militants use schools and hospitals to carry out terror attacks, and this latest finding gives greater validity to the claim.
The organization has been critical of Israel’s relationship with Gaza in the past, but it is now being called in front of Israel’s Foreign Ministry department. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yigal Palmor exclaimed, “Yet again, Gaza terrorists abuse UN facilities to carry out their violent activities. Hamas and other terror groups are determined to put civilians in harm’s way and will respect nothing in their violent frenzy.”
It is UNRWA’s responsibility to ensure the safety of all who enter their buildings. They have failed to do so and even freely admitted that they found the rockets only out of coincidence.
