Google, which is owned by Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Meta Platforms (META.O), Qualcomm (QCOM.O), and seven other technology firms, joined together on Wednesday to advocate for open digital ecosystems as a response to new regulations imposed by the European Union (EU) regarding technology. This effort may also pave the way for prospective legislation in the future.

The organization, which calls itself the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE), has stated that it intends to encourage the development of more open platforms and systems across Europe to stimulate economic growth and innovation.

Digital openness and how it may be achieved in Europe “through the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and in future EU regulatory framework developments” is something the organization has stated it would collaborate with academics, politicians, and businesses on.

The DMA mandates that gatekeepers, who are tech giants controlling access to their platforms, must permit third parties to interoperate with the gatekeeper’s services. Additionally, gatekeepers must permit their business users to market their offer and finalize contracts with their clients outside the gatekeeper’s platform.

“Over the past several months, we have engaged in several discussions on the characteristics that define ‘good’ about digital ecosystems in Europe and the factors that encourage innovation and will directly influence competitiveness. Stan Larroque, the creator of Lynx, was quoted as saying in a statement that “we believe openness is the crucial element.”

Among the other companies that are a part of this group are the Chinese manufacturer of intelligent gadgets, Lenovo (0992. HK), the French augmented reality start-up Lynx, the United States telecoms equipment manufacturer Motorola (MSI.N), the United Kingdom’s electronics manufacturer Nothing, the Norwegian technology business Opera, and the German messaging services provider Wire.

According to the Coalition, its goals include, among other things, the promotion of seamless connections and interoperable technologies and the opening of digital ecosystems through collaboration across different industries.
