MBDA’s British arm signs a $5 billion deal to bolster Poland’s air defense system. The British government said on Tuesday that MBDA, a British defense company, has inked a 4 billion pound ($4.92 billion) contract to provide Poland with ground-based air defense systems.
According to the British Ministry of Defence, the collaboration would strengthen Europe’s security amid the Ukrainian crisis and advance Poland’s Narew air defense program.
“This is another crucial step forward for our historic defense ties with Poland, supplying next-generation air defense capabilities to act as a clear deterrent to our adversaries,” Grant Shapps, the British defense secretary, said.
According to the government, the air defense system could fire missiles against air threats up to 40 kilometers away, including fighter planes and cruise missiles.
With Polish defense company PGZ, MBDA’s UK business has inked a subcontract, marking what Britain claims to be the most significant commercial agreement ever struck between the two countries.
According to PGZ, Poland is developing and supplying parts for 23 short-range anti-aircraft missile systems as part of the Narew program.
Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak stated on X that “the agreement also covers extensive technology transfer ensuring the production of rockets and launchers in Poland.”
The agreement would be “transformative” for Poland’s sophisticated weapons capabilities, according to MBDA, a joint venture between Italy’s Leonardo (LDOF.MI), Britain’s BAE Systems (BAES.L), and France’s Airbus (AIR.PA).
