UFO Sightings Could Stem from Covert Military Experiments

A recent report from the Pentagon has attributed the spike in UFO sightings during the 1950s and 1960s to the testing of advanced US spy planes and space technology. The information submitted to Congress aims to dispel widespread beliefs in alien encounters and asserts that there is “no evidence” of the US government encountering extraterrestrial life.

According to Pentagon officials, the majority of reported UFO sightings during that period were identified as ordinary objects from Earth. The report acknowledges the enduring popularity of UFO-related beliefs, attributing it to the influence of television programs, books, movies, and extensive internet and social media content focused on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP).

The study is part of the US government’s public exploration of UFOs, termed “unidentified anomalous phenomena.” Public meetings with NASA officials and congressional hearings have been part of this effort. The report, issued by the Pentagon’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), emphasizes that public opinion has been shaped by pop culture and persistent narratives, such as the government concealing spacecraft and alien remains.

Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized that the report was approached with an open mind, but investigations found no evidence of extraterrestrial visitors. The study concludes that most sightings resulted from misidentification of ordinary objects and phenomena.

The report cites a 2021 Gallup poll revealing that over 40% of Americans believe alien spacecraft have visited Earth, indicating an increase from 33% in just two years. The AARO delved into archives and classified files, debunking rumors and revealing the inauthenticity of certain documents related to UFOs.

The report lists technological advancements, including high-altitude balloons and the U-2 spy plane, as factors contributing to the surge in UFO reports in the 1950s and 60s. More than half of the investigated UFO reports during that period were determined to be US reconnaissance flights.

The AARO notes that UAP content in popular culture is currently more pervasive than ever, attributing this to a lack of trust in the US government and the popularity of online alien-related content. Despite the report’s findings, UAP sightings persist at 50 to 100 per month. The AARO plans to issue a subsequent report examining more recent sightings and rumors in the future.
