Passengers aboard the luxury residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey have been left stranded in Cambodia after its operator suspended the vessel’s round-the-world voyage, citing a dramatic surge in fuel costs linked to the war in Iran.

The US-based company, Villa Vie Residences, said it was working with passengers to arrange disembarkation and temporary accommodation. It also announced plans for a 60-day restructuring and recapitalisation process, warning that no outcome was guaranteed.

The ship, which can accommodate up to 650 passengers, had been more than 750 days into a journey that was originally expected to last three and a half years and visit nearly 150 countries.

Soaring Fuel Costs Force Suspension

Global fuel prices have risen sharply since the conflict involving Iran began earlier this year, placing additional financial pressure on cruise operators.

Villa Vie Residences said fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia had climbed to as much as $8,000 per month, compared with approximately $1,800 previously.

The company said it had attempted to limit expenses by slowing the ship’s itinerary, reducing fuel consumption and spending more time in port. However, these measures were insufficient to offset the increase in operating costs.

Passing the entire additional expense on to passengers was not considered a realistic solution, the operator said.

The suspension leaves the company facing a critical financial challenge as it attempts to secure fresh capital and restructure its operations.

Passengers Given Hours to Leave

Around 200 passengers were reportedly on board when they were instructed to disembark in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on Tuesday.

Passengers Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin told the BBC they received notice from the company’s chief executive at 6 a.m. that they needed to leave the vessel by 2 p.m.

The couple said they had been aware of the company’s financial difficulties and had hoped a potential investor would step in to save the voyage. Although an investor had previously visited the ship to conduct due diligence, the discussions ultimately did not produce an agreement.

They described the suspension as heartbreaking, saying the experience had felt like a dream coming to an abrupt end. Passengers supported one another as they came to terms with the news.

Another passenger, Holly Hennessey, said the itinerary had already been significantly reduced and that residents had previously been asked to consider paying an additional fuel surcharge.

Some passengers had chosen to leave the ship earlier and continue their travels independently.

An Uncertain Future in Cambodia

Sihanoukville, once known primarily as a quiet coastal town, has undergone major development in recent years and become associated with Chinese-backed casinos and scam centres.

Passengers said the location presented practical challenges because of its distance from a major international airport.

Many were now staying in different hotels while deciding what to do next.

Hennessey, who is travelling with her Siamese cat, Captain, said she was waiting to see whether the company could resume operations. Despite the uncertainty, she remained hopeful that the ship would eventually sail again.

For other passengers, the priority has been finding alternative travel arrangements and accommodation while they wait for clarity about the company’s financial position.

A Voyage That Began With Delays

The Villa Vie Odyssey departed Belfast in October 2024 on its planned continuous voyage around the world. Its launch had already been delayed by repairs, leaving passengers waiting in Belfast for months and costing the company millions of pounds.

Once underway, the ship offered a residential cruise lifestyle featuring bars, restaurants, a swimming pool deck and a pickleball court.

Cabins available for permanent residence were priced between $120,000 and $440,000, while rental options started at approximately $3,500 per month.

Last year, Villa Vie Residences also introduced a lifetime residence programme aimed at people hoping to spend their retirement years at sea.

In 2024, shortly after Donald Trump won a second US presidential term, the company promoted a four-year “Skip Forward” package. Its chief executive described the offer as an option for people who had said they would leave the country if a particular candidate won the election.

The latest suspension has therefore disrupted not only a cruise itinerary but also a lifestyle built around living aboard the vessel.

Passengers Reflect on the Experience

Despite the unexpected end to the voyage, Canen and Bodin said their time aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey had been worthwhile.

They recalled the destinations they had visited, the adventures they experienced and the friendships they developed during nearly two years at sea.

The couple said many passengers were already making plans to settle near one another on land, allowing the community formed aboard the ship to continue beyond the voyage.

They intend to spend a few days in Sihanoukville before travelling elsewhere in Southeast Asia as they work out their next steps.

For Hennessey, however, the possibility of returning to the ship remains important. She said she was reluctant to abandon the residential cruise lifestyle unless the company confirmed that the voyage was definitively over.

What Happens Next?

Villa Vie Residences has said it will spend the next 60 days pursuing restructuring and recapitalisation, but it has not guaranteed that the process will succeed.

For passengers, the immediate concerns are accommodation, travel costs and uncertainty about whether they will ever return to the vessel.

The suspension also highlights the financial risks facing long-duration residential cruises, where passengers commit substantial sums to a lifestyle that depends on an operator’s ability to manage fuel prices, repairs and other running costs.

Until the company provides further clarity, the future of the Villa Vie Odyssey and its ambitious world voyage remains uncertain.
