South Korea’s finance minister met with the Chinese ambassador on Friday to discuss economic cooperation amid diplomatic concerns with Beijing.
After the 30-minute meeting, Minister Choo Kyung-ho emphasized his wishes for sustained economic cooperation between the two countries based on reciprocity and mutual respect, the ministry said.
The statement stated that Choo, South Korea’s top economic and financial policymaker, requested assistance preparing for a bilateral economic ministers’ meeting in Seoul this year.
After South Korea’s ambassador to Washington suggested that Seoul would soon explore senior-level exchanges with Beijing early this month, the ministry did not divulge Ambassador Xing Haiming’s statements during the meeting.
Diplomatic tensions over regional geopolitical issues like China’s Taiwan policy may damage a South Korean economy already struggling with exports.
CJ ENM (035760. KQ) and Netmarble (251270. KS), two South Korean businesses with China operations, increased by 2.5% and 1.5% on Friday.
